Guest Review of “Xanadu”

Guest Review of Xanadu

“Oh Snapeth!” This weekend at Old Mill High School suddenly you’re alive and brought back to the 80’s in this fun and spunky version of Xanadu.

The musical Xanadu was produced on Broadway in 2007 and ran for a year with 512 performances.  The production was first a movie in 1980 starring Olivia Newton-John and Michael Beck.

The cast as a whole brought energy and excitement throughout the musical which created a lively and entertaining production.  Both the ensemble and the leads managed to produce a very entertaining show.

Some main characters that brought alive the musical include; Amy Matousek as Kira, Mark Hawkins as Sonny and Genesis Hayes as Melpomene.  Matousek had a very enjoyable performance that caused her to stand out and be very amusing.  Hawkins as well was very entertaining and created a spirited atmosphere with his hilarity.  Lastly Hayes’ vocals were near professional that caused her to be very noticeable.

Another very notable character was Faye Barrett playing the role of Calliope.  Her performance brought a comical and very amusing factor to the musical.  The dancing skills of Megan Donaldson also were not to go unnoticed; she was easily a stand out among the others with her professional looking dancing.  The muses as a whole were all very talented and produced an entertaining performance.

The props, set and makeup were all very noteworthy.  Props, such as the phone booth and the Pegasus, were extremely creative and caused heads to turn.  The bright and striking makeup created a very nice stage picture, especially that of the muses.  Also the sets being simple produced an overall useful effect.

The production of Xanadu by Old Mill is not to be skated past.  The cast’s recreation of this bubbly musical causes heads to turn with their lively performance and wonderful skating skills.
