Doctor Strange: A Must-See This Fall

Doctor Strange: A Must-See This Fall

Maggie Sullivan, Staff Writer

I start to write this review of Doctor Strange with the realization that I am probably not the best candidate to do so. I loved this movie far too much to be unbiased in my criticism, so prepare yourself for a whole lot of gushing on my part.

Doctor Strange follows a man named Doctor Steven Strange, a brilliant neurosurgeon and, quite frankly, a bit of a jerk at first. He’s got everything he wants in life: loads of money, a fast car, a beautiful and brilliant coworker, and amazing talent. However, he doesn’t really use his gifts to help others; rather, he uses them to promote his fame.

Fast forward about twenty minutes, and our beloved doctor has been in a car crash, lost the use of his hands, and spent all of his money on experimental operations in an attempt to fix them. Desperate to heal his hands and resume his career, he goes to Nepal to seek spiritual healing. There, Strange discovers a way of life that goes against everything he’s ever believed, and the unimaginable power that comes with it.

With the help of some powerful allies with magical abilities that can (quite literally) shake the world, Doctor Strange defends Earth from an evil magician named Kaecilius, who is disturbingly like the doctor himself. Will he be able to save the world from a destructive force that is beyond Time itself?

Doctor Strange was amazing in so many ways. The costumes, for one, were amazing: epic in a kind of way that made me want to wear them on a regular basis. What can I say? I have a flair for the dramatic, and those hoods were about as dramatic as you can get. Just look at them!

Awesome.

However, Doctor Strange wasn’t only composed of the fight scenes and cheesy drama one would expect from an action movie; there was some refreshing humor, along with fantastic imagery and a rockin’ soundtrack. You definitely won’t be disappointed if you see this movie.

A warning: if you really don’t like on-screen surgery or needles (shudder), you should be ready to shut your eyes for maybe eight minutes out of the entire movie, tops. There are quite a few pointy things in this movie.
