Art Week 2015

Art Week 2015

Every year, the National Art Honor Society plans an Art Week in February. Art Week is always full of fun and creativity, and this year was no exception. The NAHS always plans daily activities for students to showcase their artistic skills, but this year even the alumnae had a place in the festivities. The Alumnae Art Show, which is featured in NDP’s gallery, showcases paintings, drawings, photographs, and more from alumnae of all different classes. More than thirty years of alumnae are featured in this new exhibit! This wasn’t the only new addition to Art Week, though.

This year, there was a lunchtime session of “Flowa Powa” on Monday, where students were welcome to make flowers out of tissue paper and take them home. These flowers were a great success, and everyone had a great time making them as well as other arts and crafts.

Tuesday was another special day for the NAHS. It was Memory Project Day, meaning that dozens of NDP art students turned in their Memory Project portraits to be hung in the gallery. Students who participate in the Memory Project are assigned children from foreign countries. This year’s country was Ghana, and every art student who participated drew, painted, or digitally altered a photograph of a different child living in Ghana. These portraits will hang in the NDP art gallery until March, when they will be delivered to the children. The portraits this year are fantastic and will certainly bring a lot of joy to the children who receive them.

On Wednesday, Project Greenway was held, which was certainly the peak of excitement of Art Week. Dozens of girls and their models showcased their original dresses, which were made entirely out of recycled materials. There were categories for middle level, upper level, and individual designs, and there were many diverse materials used, which ranged from shoelaces to sea glass. The students even got to elect the winners by choosing their favorite dresses from each category. It was a successful show with more participation than ever before, and this year even had a new name. This year’s show was named “Claire’s Project Greenway” by the NAHS in honor of Claire Wagonhurst, who loved participating in the fashion show during her time at NDP. All of the participants were happy to dedicate their dresses to their senior sister, and the show continued with great enthusiasm.

Overall, Art Week was as fun-filled as usual, and everybody got to enjoy it, whether they were in the National Art Honor Society or not. This year’s celebration was certainly the best so far, and I am sure that it will continue to be a blast in years to come!
