Filled with comedy, romance, and musical numbers that are sure to get you singing along, Crazy for You was brought to life by NDP Theater on November 14-16. This musical follows the story of Bobby Child (played by Teagle W.), a New York banker who dreams of performing onstage but is ridiculed for his dream by his mother, Lottie (played by Aislinn M. ’27), and his fiancĂ©, Irene (played by Sydney N. ’26). He decides to audition for Bela Zangler’s Follies yet again, but the audition ends miserably, and Zangler (played by Luke D.) shoos him away. Afterwards, Bobby is sent to Deadrock, Nevada to foreclose on a rundown theater as a last chance to please his mother. In Deadrock, Bobby falls for Polly Baker (played by Maggie R. ’27), the theater owner’s bold daughter. However, Polly decides right then and there that Bobby isn’t for her. Determined to win Polly’s heart, Bobby pulls a scheme that involves disguising himself as Zangler, and he hopes that it will save the theater and eventually win him the girl of his dreams.
In order to pull off performing such an incredible show, the cast, crew, and orchestra had to work very hard. Rehearsals for the cast started all the way back at the beginning of September, where they learned the melodies and harmonies for all the songs and choreography for the dance numbers. It was especially challenging to learn the songs because Gershwins’ musicals are known to have difficult musical numbers to sing. The choreography also required a lot of work because many of the numbers were quite long and involved a lot of tap dancing! In addition, the stage crew had to learn all the cues for lighting and scene changes and had to move many pieces around on stage. Finally, this musical had its own orchestra (featuring Katelyn M. ’26 and Fifi B. ’26), and the members of it had to learn the intricacies of playing live in a short period of time. However, despite all the demanding aspects of the show, everyone involved put in so much hard work, effort, and dedication, and it truly showed during all of the performances!
Not only did the audience of all three shows truly enjoy this magical performance, but the cast members also had a blast putting it together! Here are what some of them have to say about their experience:
Julia S. ’28 (Patsy): “I had an unforgettable experience being Patsy, the dumb blonde, in the musical! I loved tap dancing, singing, and delivering my funny lines! I’m so grateful for Mrs. Poxon, Mrs. Bilenki, and the cast for making this show amazing!”
Mia S. ’26 (Patricia): “I particularly loved being in Crazy for You because it is a story about uplifting the arts and finding fulfillment. It is such a beautiful piece with great music, and I am so grateful to have been a part of it!”
To everyone involved in the fall musical, congratulations on a successful show! Your talents and commitment shone on stage, and we are so grateful to you for them!
