Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is scary and riveting, touching and beautiful. Based on Ransom Riggs’ debut novel, it follows the story of Jacob as he follows clues left by his grandfather to an orphanage on a Welsh island. Here, he expects to find answers about his grandfather’s mysterious death, but instead finds the orphanage destroyed and abandoned. He almost gives up hope before he finds a mysterious girl on the island.

With this girl and other mysterious children, he is able to enter a portal to the loop created by Miss Peregrine. All of the children under the care of the graceful Miss Peregrine are peculiar in some way. One must wear heavy shoes so that she does not float away. Another child is invisible. All of the peculiars are in danger because the evil peculiars and Hallowgasts, Slenderman-like creatures with tentacles coming out of their mouths, are out to kill them. Each group of peculiars around the world hides in a loop, a specific day that repeats over and over again while present time goes on. Soon, Miss Peregrine’s loop is in danger, and Jacob is the only person who can save them.

All of Tim Burton’s movies are scary or creepy, and this one is certainly no exception. Harrowing anticipation leading to intense action scenes involving the horrifying Hallowgasts and evil peculiars lend the movie jump scares. The use of CGI brings the Hallowgasts and other elements of the movie to life. But this is not just a scary movie. It also includes romance and selfless devotion to loved ones. Therefore, just like other Tim Burton movies, the action is scary, but the characters are endearing.

Anyone can find something to enjoy about Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children because it involves romance and friendship, historical and fantastical elements, and is altogether delightfully scary.
