Pope Francis has many firsts as a pope. One of his more notable ones is that he is the first pope to address Congress. His actual speech was not very long, but held a lot of power. In order to get his message across, Pope Francis used famous Americans to make his point. While talking about Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton, he was also able to talk to young people and inform them that they are the people that are able to use noble fundamental values to build a better life. Later, as he built his points around the famous American activists, Pope Francis stressed the importance of choosing the good over the evil. He explained that fighting evil with more evil is not a good option either and that striving for a common good should be done in a peaceful manner. In addition, he outlined the great need for taking care of the environment by saying that we need a form of energy that will be sustainable and lasting throughout time. One of Pope Francis’s other large topics was the poverty in America and how all humans have to protect human life. Along with poverty, he discussed the refugee crisis and the golden rule, reminding the people of how they would want to be treated. As a whole, Pope Francis’ historic address to Congress brought attention to many world issues and set the bar high for any other world leaders that do it in the future.
