8 Outdoor Spring Activities

The coming of March marks the start of spring, the season of new beginnings. Now that warmer weather is upon us, it might be a good idea to get outside and do something fun! Here is a list of eight activities you can try out this spring:

  1. Do some gardening

The beginning of spring is a great time to learn how to garden. All you need are some seeds, healthy soil, a source of water, and the right tools. Whether you want to plant flowers such as petunias and marigolds or food such as peppers and tomatoes, there are plenty of things to plant now that you can enjoy later in the year.

  1. Participate in spring sports

Spring sports range from lacrosse and softball to ultimate frisbee and golf. Not only can regular exercise help boost your physical health, but your mental health as well, as it improves your mood and lessens your stress. If athletics interest you, try to get involved in spring sports, either at NDP or in your greater community.

  1. Fly a kite

For those who enjoy windy days, flying a kite may be the thing for you. It’s a great activity to try out with family or friends and can even help improve your hand-eye coordination skills. For an added challenge, follow a YouTube video or internet tutorial to try and make your own kite, and then fly it!

  1. Have a picnic

There’s something so fun and relaxing about enjoying good food and good company in the outdoors. It’s the perfect way to take advantage of good weather, and you get to enjoy some free Vitamin D in addition to whatever delicious food you decide to bring. However, make sure to clean up after yourself when you’re done; you don’t want to leave any unnecessary litter outside.

  1. Visit a park

Taking a walk around a local park can be great for both your physical and mental health. There are plenty of places around Maryland for you to do, from Gunpowder Falls State Park to Patterson Park. If you have a pet that loves the outdoors, you can even bring them along.

  1. Go cloud watching

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s good to just take a step back and relax. All you have to do is look up, and you just might see some cool things. Cloud watching is a great way to calm yourself, enjoy the beautiful sky, and utilize your imagination.

  1. Make a bird feeder

With the return of spring also comes the return of many birds. Whether you get a birdhouse kit or just cover a pinecone in some peanut butter and seeds, making a birdhouse is a great way to connect with nature. If you’re interested, try to learn a little something about the types of birds that are native to your area and come to your feeder.

  1. Paint rocks

If you’re on the more artistic side, painting rocks would be a great activity for you! Go outside, look for some nice, smooth rocks, and paint whatever you want on them. Then you can use the painted rocks to decorate your own garden or lawn or even leave them out in places like parks for other people to find.

I hope you found something new to do this spring! Not only do these fun activities allow you to take advantage of beautiful weather, but they may even relieve you of some stress from your busy life at school.
