Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements and recognition of African Americans, who have a central role in U.S. history. It is a time to appreciate the importance of African Americans and the beautiful impact they have on the world.

This tradition began as a week-long celebration on the week of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. During the Civil Rights Movement, “Negro History Week” became Black History Month because of the growing awareness of black identity. The purpose of this month is to honor and recognize the legacy of African Americans throughout history. In 1976, Black History Month has followed a theme assigned for that year. This year of 2023 was assigned the theme “Black Resistance” which explores how these people resisted and fought against past and ongoing oppression. This theme was inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. idea of nonviolent protest for equal rights. One can participate in this special month’s celebration by spreading awareness and speaking out against injustice through bias. Educating oneself of such important events these Americans played a part in and understanding the need for awareness is essential. Overall, Black History Month calls people around the world to validate and honor the sacrifices, experiences, accomplishments, and prejudice faced by African Americans.

Unite as a community this month to celebrate those who deserve it more than anyone and be a supporter for all that is right and just.
