Guest Review of Almost, Maine

Bundle up with coats, scarves, snow boots, and gloves and prepare to get lost admiring the Northern Lights with the Severna Park Stage Company in their heartwarming production of “Almost, Maine”.

Welcome to Almost, Maine! This story, set in the snowy and mystic wilderness of northern Maine, follows nine couples as they navigate through the trials and tribulations of love on a frosty Friday night. Written by John Cariani, the production uses a series of vignettes to reveal the complexities and challenges of various couples when falling in, and out of love. Under the magical glow of the resplendent Northern Lights, hearts are broken, sentiments are revealed, and lives are changed forever. But this almost love is more than enough in Almost, Maine.

The talent and creativity of the cast was expertly showcased in each scene of the show. In many cases, the actors courageously used silence to convey the unspoken words and desires of their characters, allowing them to become fully immersed in their performance. This concept created a sense of authenticity that made the show believable and commanded the audience’s attention.

Although this is a true ensemble show, a few actors were standouts among the cast. Taylor Stokes (Glory) expressed her character’s vulnerable and talkative disposition through her animated physicality and whimsical intonation. Her counterpart, Michael Bateman (East), used silence to his advantage when conveying his character’s apprehension and captivation with Glory through his long pauses when attempting to find the right words to express his emotions. Another dynamic duo in the show was Jenna Baker (Rhonda) and Adam Stovall (Dave). Their charming and humorous portrayal of these friends turned lovers captivated the audience, eliciting thunderous whistles and hoots when they stripped down their countless layers of clothing to goofy matching onesies on stage.

Other distinguished actors were Matt Hall (Chad) and Sam Hickman (Randy). These two proved that love is found in the most unexpected of places when the pair “fell” for each other during their comical scene. Their on stage chemistry was exquisite, effortlessly playing off of each other and leaving the audience both swooning and laughing. Another notable couple was Ariyana Byrd (Gayle) and Xavier Simms- Jackson (Lendall), who provided effervescent comedic relief while simultaneously portraying a meaningful scene.

The technical aspects of the show were an impressive feat.  In particular, the vibrant lime green streaks as Northern Lights projected onto the starry background created an enchanting aesthetic that transported the audience away to this scenic town.

So journey up the east coast, relax under the sparkling stars, and fall in love with the Severna Park Stage Company’s rendition of “Almost, Maine”.
